Collaborations Between SERC and Other Carleton Offices, Projects and People
List of Current Collaborations
This project is a follow-on to the Starting Point project. It extends the scope to disciplines beyond the geosciences. Through this grant SERC developed a portal with the Carleton Learning and Teaching Center (LTC) to highlight the teaching experiences of Carleton faculty across campus. The initial focus was disseminating the work that took place in an on-campus Quantitative Writing workshop. As a result of this collaboration a new site was developed which describes this pedagogic approach and highlights the related work of 5 Carleton faculty. This work also served as the impetus for the development of the Carleton teaching activity collection available through the LTC website and hosted by SERC. A module on "Teaching with Visuality" is currently being developed by Carleton faculty and will also include teaching examples from Carleton.
This website provides guidance on effective pedagogy along with a collection of exemplary activities. Because of the project's focus on the geosciences, SERC worked closely with members of the Carleton Geology department and ENTS program in the development of the site. The site includes 19 activities developed by Carleton faculty as well as a 'Field Labs' pedagogic module developed by Carleton faculty. Carleton faculty have participated in reviewing some of the modules and other site content.
This project, a collaboration between Barnard, Carleton, Vassar and Williams, aims to develop and disseminate exemplary genomics curricula appropriate for liberal arts colleges. SERC is developing the website through which the project will be disseminated and has worked with Carleton faculty members to highlight existing Carleton biology exercises.
SERC hosts and assists in the design and development of the CISMI website. This site highlights the interdisciplinary work of Carleton faculty and serves as a mechanism for sharing CISMI efforts within the campus community and beyond. SERC has also developed websites to support and disseminate 3 CISMI sponsored workshops: Team-Based Learning, Interdisciplinary Computational Modeling, and Carleton's Energy Future.
SERC worked with faculty at Carleton and St. Olaf College to build a website in support of this workshop which was a cooperative effort between the two colleges. The website highlights how faculty at both institutions integrate sustainability issues into their teaching.
This national program developed a resource-rich website drawing for the results of six workshops (5 hosted at Carleton) and relying on key contributions from 4 Carleton faculty. The existing site reflects Carleton's deep expertise in this area and includes a number of activities developed by Carleton faculty.
This project explores the use of digital resources by higher education faculty. Carleton faculty participated in a preliminary focus group and provided reviews of the survey instrument. 127 Carleton faculty and instructors participated in the nation-wide survey.
This project combines a series of workshops and websites to provide professional development opportunities, resources, and opportunities for geosciences faculty to interact on-line and in person with colleagues around the world who are focused on improving their teaching. Carleton faculty have participated in the workshops, contributed to the growing collection of teaching activities, and reviewed portions of the site.
The Geological Society of America (GSA) Field forum
This GSA-sponsored field trip provided a forum for an ethnographic study to understand how geoscientists observe geologic features in the field and to identify the role that field work plays in the professional growth of a geoscientist. The principal investigators for this study included a Carleton faculty member and the Director of SERC.
