Elementary Science Education Activities & Games

In this section of Hands On Plastics, Jr., we have created fun, educational games and activities that you can perform with your students, or at home with your child. Each of these games and activities is designed to teach elementary school students about the positive impact plastics have on our everyday lives. Plastics can be molded into rigid articles, made into sheets, film or fibers. Plastics also include coatings (like paint) and adhesives (like tape and white glue). These activities will help activate students prior knowledge of plastics, while providing new information to the learner. Since these activities were created to help teachers meet requirements defined by the NSES, they can easily be incorporated into any elementary curriculum.

Plastics and safety

Click here to start the safety activity.
The object of this game is to identify a variety of plastic safety items and match them to the appropriate person. By doing so, children will learn that a variety of safety devices are all made from plastics. For example, the safety helmet made from polystyrene and fiberglass belongs on the in-line skater.

Parents and teachers: While playing this activity, encourage children to think of additional plastic objects that help to keep them safe at home, school, and play. This will help children prepare for the quiz at the end of the activity.

Plastics in your home

Click here to start the house activity.
This activity is similar to the safety activity, except this time we take a look at how plastics help play a key role in many household products and objects. By placing items in the house correctly, children learn how plastics improve our daily lives and are used for many objects in our homes. For example, plastic sandwich bags that keep food fresh and prevent contamination belong in the kitchen.

Parents and teachers: While doing this activity, encourage children to think of additional plastic household objects that play a role in their everyday lives. This will help children prepare for the quiz at the end of the activity.
